Plant native trees to protect soil and improve the fertility of the earth bearing in mind the foreboding loom of the permanent loss of the glaciers, the only consistent source of water (estimated 30 years left - just enough to reforest if we were to start now).

CURRENT SITUATION:
The air is thin up here, it takes a long time for a native tree to take root and grow independent, a lot of early care is needed to make sure it survives. For this reason more people are growing Eucalyptus for firewood. Only these trees sap a lot of moisture from the ground, making it harder for other trees, plants and crops to prosper. Then once these Eucalypt are chopped down, they don't add shade nor help sustain bird life. If we don't reforest now whist the glaciers can still support watering needs, this range will turn into the Cordillera Negra (the black range that is struggling to support any type of life and is most arid because it was early stripped of plant life and now, as a result, doesn't have the ground vegetation needed to attract rain.

OUR SOLUTION:
Plant trees! The actual native saplings cost little money but we need money to help with their planting (these people can't afford to work for free but will work for minimum wage for a project that benefits the community as a whole. Here's an estimated breakdown of what 1 tree would cost:
- sapling of quenual/kishwa - s/.0.40
- labour of digging a hole - s/.1.80
- Compost or good soil for one tree s/.1.00
- Labour of adding soil and planting s/.1.00
- Administration - s/.0.80
- Labour costs to water sapling every other day in the dry season and when rain fails in wet season s/.5.00
TOTAL: s/.10 per tree

TASKS ACCOMPLISHED
- Talked to community elder recarding allocating communal land to reforestation
- Called an official meeting with a proposal outling long term benefits of tree planting to be brought before all community members for voting

TASKS PROJECTED
- Get community authorisation for specific sites to be allocated for tree planting - it is necessary also to get their agreement in the follow up care of the plants by preventing their animals from nibbling the young shoots or stamping on them.
- Plant a tree appeal in high seasons
- Start digging in beginning of rainy season - October - and work through rainy season
- Implement long term after planting watering and care
