Sewage in these parts is fed directly into the local rivers, causing obvious contamination and the loss of a potentially valuable resource.

CURRENT PROBLEM:
With the lack of care put into disposal its no wonder disease is so rampant in these parts. To stay warm at night these people have combed the area of anything that resembles wood for generations. This has taken its toll on the soil, as wood decomposition has not added its richness for a long time. With so little wood in comparison to people, gas is bought for stoves. As with electricity companies, prices are high (making the demand for wood a realistic option, further aggravating the problem) and similarly, a centralised organisation structure means money doesn`t stay in the local economy. A fortune is spent on fertiliser, as the soil is so poor. Once again this money is not circulated in the local area.

OUR SOLUTION:
Build large depository tanks for sewage. Install the relevant equipment to tank gas that is naturally emitted from this waste. The faeces is then extracted and left in the sun for 3 days. The intense UV rays at this altitude, combined with its proximity to the equator, will kill dangerous bacteria leaving dung that can be mixed into the soil as fertiliser. The community then uses the gas and fertiliser, adding to this plan's appeal by reducing environmental impact AND encouraging sustainable growth in this region

TASKS ACCOMPLISHED:
- Liaised with the local municipality with regards to a proposed sewage treatment for this village with the intention of installing bio digesters at the same time.
- Researched how this system has been tried and proven.
- Co-ordinating implementation of plan

TASKS PROJECTED:
- Do a prototype with researched materials to propose accurate costs.
- Fund raising - with the estimated sum (it will be more accurate after prototype is completed) of $150 per household we could install a micro bio digester for each family.
- Find sponsorship with national toilet manufacturer for the donation of toilet facilities.
- Train the users on care and maintenance of system.
