Living in this part of the world is very much like stepping back into the 19th century, before the industrial revolution. The locals grow crops, herd cattle and live at a subsistence level - they are not part of the market economy. Life is simple but hard and we are reminded how far we have come in the west - our lives are easier (we no longer struggle simply to survive) but are often less fulfilling and are certainly more hectic and stressful.

While we appreciate getting back to basics on a personal level, it is obvious that the world has changed. People congregate in ever increasing numbers and the subsequent environmental impacts affect the globe as a whole. The inhabitants of undeveloped countries are highly motivated towards development - they, quite rightly in our view, wish to share the luxuries of the western world. Yet if all countries were to achieve development and act as spendthriftly as we in the west do, the planet would very rapidly become uninhabitable.

It is this logical conclusion to current development trends that The Way Forward is dedicated to tackling. Our objective is to take the best, sustainable technologies that have emerged in the west and incorporate them into the indigenous lifestyles. We do not seek to change their lifestyle (each family generally owns enough land to farm for their own consumption and retains the know how of how to do so) but only to optimise their way of life, giving them access to their own energy sources, technical assistence in agricultural techniques and help in raising funds to improve infrastructure.
